Chaos Engine

The Chaos Engine is a top-down run and gun computer game developed by the Bitmap Brothers and published by Renegade Software in 1993

All the data of the game is stored in the CHAOS.DAT file.

This file has two parts. Namely

  • Entries Table
  • Data

Entries table starts with 4-bytes integer which describes the length of the entries table. After that byte are entries. Each entry is organized as following:

  • 1-byte  : length of the file name
  • bytes  : NON-ASCIIZ file name of the specified length
  • 4 bytes : Offset the entry in the CHAOS.DAT
  • 4 bytes : size of the entry in the CHAOS.DAT

The data section consists of possibly PKZIP compressed data for the entries.
